Hello AAU Boys Basketball Program Leaders,

Hello and happy upcoming holiday’s to you & yours! I’m Brian Murray, the president of the Vista Talons AAU Boys Basketball program in Folsom. This season the Vista Talons AAU Boys Basketball program is hosting our 2nd Annual Vista Talons Classic – 8th grade boys AAU basketball tournament at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, CA. The tournament dates are Saturday March 21st & Sunday March 22nd. This tournament has gained popularity quickly so please read carefully and act quickly !

For our Vista Talons 8th grade boys, this is their last youth-level tournament before entering freshmen basketball at VHS. My goal has been to create a high school caliber, championship style, 3-game guarantee tournament using NFHS rules, boys 35-second shot clock, (4) 8-minute quarters with qualified varsity and college level officials. Teams will also have dedicated locker room access for changing (pre-game) and for halftime team talk. We try to create an atmosphere that mirrors what they’ll experience at the next level!

We will have (2) 8-team championship style brackets. One bracket will be for Division-I or A-Team level. Additionally, we’ll have a 2nd bracket for Division-II or B-Team level. So essentially two tournaments run at one location over the course of two days. If you haven’t been to Vista del Lago high school – you’ll love the facility that has a very large main gym and a great auxiliary gym – both equipped with large bleachers. The two gyms have a spacious gym lobby and concessions area in between lined with glass windows and doors to see action from both courts at the same time while enjoying refreshments.

Some other extras we add to this tournament…

– Big bracket posters in the lobby for both divisions (show teams, game schedules, which gym) updated after every game
– Pre-game warmup music (teams will get a minimum of 8-min to warm-up)
– Championship games announcer with player introductions
– All Tourney trophies for (8) players in each division (nominated by opposing coaches)
– MVP trophy for (1) player in each division
– Consolation Championship trophy in each division
– 2nd Place trophy in each division
– 1st Place Championship trophy in each division
– NOTE: All awards are announced and handed out at the conclusion of the Division-I championship game in the main gym on Sunday (around 4pm)
– Full snack bar concessions onsite
– Many nearby restaurants and hotels within 5-min of VHS location

Last year was our inaugural 8th grade tournament event and instantly all the participating coaches, players, spectators and even the officials loved this tournament! Many stated this was the best tournament at this grade level – they’ve ever been a part of and we (Talons program) were very appreciative and couldn’t wait to run it again this season!

Below is draft of the bracket schedules. One thing I changed from last year – is starting all the “aux gym” games on Sunday 30-min earlier. This will allow coaches, players and spectators that are idle – to catch the conclusion of consolation games in the aux gym in addition to the championship games in the main gym. Many programs provide a D1 and D2 team so there’s potential to have both teams playing around the same times so for that reason I’m offsetting the aux gym schedules on Sunday to start 30-min earlier than main gym schedules.

Fired up? Ready to register your teams… I know many of you that had teams in last year’s event are so here is the registration info:

Required online registration link: http://www.leagueathletics.com/Store/Store.asp?id=12705&n=&org=Vistatalons%2Ecom (the payment portion of the registration system will take you to a secure site https://)
Registration status: currently OPEN
Cost: $258 per team

Notes: Registration is on a 1st come 1st served basis and the registration system will indicate if one or both division are full and not allow more than 8-teams per division. If you are only registering 1 team from your program please ensure you are defining the correct division for your team. Most programs invited are true feeder programs to high schools and not teams formed with regional players. We do want to make each bracket as competitive as possible. If you have a very strong competitive team – please sign them up for D1. If your team is pretty good but you typically play in lower divisions at other tournaments and those are a good fit competitively – the D2 selection is probably your best fit. I do reserve the right to make division changes for teams but I’ll contact you directly first if I feel your registered division is questionable.
